An elderly woman was violently attacked during a home invasion in Quarry Village, Siparia on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred around 9.45 am at a two-storey home.
Police said the 79-year-old pensioner was in the kitchen on the ground floor of her home when two intruders entered through an open front door. The bandits beat the elderly woman on her head and about the body, tying her hands and feet before proceeding to steal several items, including $5,000 in cash, two televisions, gold jewellery, and two 20-pound gas cylinders.
The suspects ransacked the property before running off.
The elderly woman managed to free herself and alerted authorities with the assistance of passersby. She was later taken to the Siparia District Health Facility for medical treatment.
Following investigations, officers searched a heavily forested area near Sand Pit Road, where they saw a makeshift camp with a man holding a television. The man, who is known to the police and had no fixed place of abode, dropped the television and ran deeper into the forest, eluding the officers. The television and the two gas cylinders in the camp were later identified by the victim.
South Western Division Task Force officers are investigating.
