Engineers from the Chaguanas Borough Corporation (CBC) are developing a comprehensive plan to alleviate flooding in Goodwill Trace and Bynoe Trace, Enterprise, two of the areas worst affected by last week’s deluge after heavy rainfall.
Mayor Faaiq Mohammed emphasised that excessive volumes of water are being channelled into the area: “We are now looking at ways to divert that water out into other channels to reduce the impact.”
Reflecting on the broader situation, Mohammed noted that flooding across the borough appears to be easing. “We have suffered from tremendous flooding in recent years. I remember in 2023 when the Durham Village Hindu School was flooded and students had to be rescued. We have since cleared several watercourses, and more are being cleared.”
Despite this progress, resources remain essential: “We can’t escape from flooding because of several factors, including the human factor of illegal dumping into watercourses. We must change this attitude and re-examine how we as individuals deal with household garbage.”
The CBC has already cleared watercourses at Akbar Trace, Sumaria Trace, and Bon Aventure, Cunupia. “We look forward to working with the Ministry of Works, which would provide the heavy equipment needed to desilt other areas,” Mohammed added.
