A former Children’s Life Fund employee was expected to appear before a Port-of-Spain magistrate yesterday, charged with 13 counts of larceny of the property of the Children’s Life Fund.
Krisas Sookraj, 43, of School Street, Carenage, was charged with 13 counts of fraud against the Children’s Life Fund amounting to US$15,640.
The incidents are alleged to have occurred during July 2015, while she was employed as an executive assistant at the Children’s Life Fund.
The sums of money were approved by the board of the Children’s Life Fund to be issued as payment to 13 children, between the ages of three to six years, who were suffering from life-threatening diseases.
An investigation was launched into the misappropriation of state funds by Snr Supt Tooteram Dookhie and a team of officers from the Fraud Squad. After analysing the evidence, instructions were given by the Director of Public Prosecutions to initiate prosecution against the former Life Fund employee.
Sookraj was arrested at her home on Wednesday.
Charges were laid by Sgt Damian Thomas, of the Fraud Squad, yesterday.
