The family of a La Romain painter who was murdered following an altercation on Sunday night is calling for justice.

Zaid Mohammed, 31, of Pond Street, La Romain, was beaten and stabbed, his family said.

Earlier that night, he had an altercation with his girlfriend at a bar over two men who were “interfering” with her. Less than 20 minutes later, he was dead.

Police said around 10.30 pm residents heard screeching tyres and saw a silver Almera stop opposite Rosetta Street along Dumfries Road.

Mohammed was seen scuffling with three occupants, including a woman, inside the car. Mohammed managed to exit the car, but it then rolled over him and crashed into a drain.

Mohammed got up and limped a short distance away before he collapsed and died. His attackers left in the car.

Mohammed’s older brother Sharaz recalled that he (Mohammed) was liming at a bar with his girlfriend when they got into an altercation over two men who were “interfering” with her.

He said Mohammed’s girlfriend left him there and went home.

“He was walking back home, but I assume they pulled him in the car.  It was not long after,” Sharaz said.

Complaining that crime in T&T was overbearing, he said, “My brother did not deserve to die like this. Even if there was an altercation, it should not have ended up like this.  They could have left him to live his life.”

He said his brother was not violent and wouldn’t have provoked a fight.

Sharaz said his brother’s gold chain and money were missing.

Mohammed’s father, who returned to the crime scene yesterday, cried out for justice.

“Nobody could bring back my son for me,” he said.

He said he picked up Mohammed after work on Sunday, and they went liming. When he left him at the bar, everything was normal.

“I went to Penal and came back to this... The state of crime is very, very bad. The police are not doing enough,” he lamented.

Officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region 3 are investigating.
