Carli Bay fishermen are in urgent need of a jetty to moor their vessels. So said Imtiaz Mohammed, the president of the Carli Bay Fishermen Association. He was speaking with Guardian Media on Saturday morning when the Carli Bay Fish Festival opened with the blessing of the boats for St Peter’s Day by associate deacon Colin Lezama of the Diego Martin United Church.
Mohammed said Carli Bay can serve as a major tourist attraction and earn revenue through domestic tourism but infrastructure such as the roadway and the jetty need to be fixed. He said without a jetty boatmen have to remain in the sea with their vessels until the tide changes and are forced to park their pirogues along the beach.
President of the Couva-Point Lisas Chamber of Commerce Ramchand Rajbal Maraj said the area needs electricity, streetlights, and regular police patrols. Rajbal-Maraj said the relevant authorities should intervene and make the necessary repairs. He said domestic tourism can also serve as a timely income generator for people who are unemployed or seeking additional income.
