A 39-year-old fisherman was gunned down early yesterday morning, soon after returning from a night at sea, sparking renewed concerns about the safety and conditions at the Carli Bay fishing facilities.Police said Calvin Sankar, of Cemetery Street, was ambushed and shot around 3.20 am in front of the fishing depot. He died at the scene. Sankar, who lived alone and had no children, was well-known in the local fishing community.Carli Bay Fishing Association president Imtiaz Khan yesterday voiced outrage over the state of the fishing facilities and the lack of security in the area. He described the infrastructure as “deplorable” and poorly lit — a condition he believes contributed to the murder.Khan revealed that under the previous People’s National Movement administration, the Fisheries Division had conducted an estimate for installing lighting towers, but the project was abandoned due to cost concerns.“We’ve lost another life. How many more do we have to lose before anything is done to make things better?” Khan asked.Khan claimed several violent incidents have occurred at the fishing facility since 2018, yet authorities have failed to implement meaningful security improvements. He added that the association had met with the then-minister of National Security in 2021, but he’s hoping to engage with the heads of security under the new Government.
