Betrothed couples left in the lurch following last weekend’s devastating floods may still be able to tie the knot. Bridal shop owner Sherene Mohammed is offering to donate two wedding dresses and two suits to flood victims once they can prove that they were flooded out. The idea to donate wedding clothes came after Mohammed heard a couple had to put off their wedding because they lost everything in the floods.
Mohammed, who owns Brides N’ Grooms in St James, said she believed in marriage and felt this would assist couples to cope during the period of recovery. She said if there were more couples who planned to get married she was also willing to provide clothing at a discounted price.
“I can also give away free headpieces, veils and accessories,” Mohammed added.
She said there was a darkness pervading the country and the overwhelming response by the public to flood victims was heart-warming.
“The whole of Trinidad has a new energy and it was all about people helping people. The response from the public was fantastic. The love that people share for one another is unbelievable,” Mohammed said.
“I believe the flood was something that God allowed to happen to bring out the love among people. Love changes everything and that is why I am willing to donate to couples so they will not have to put off their weddings.”
She is not the only person to donate items to flood victims. In Valencia, a seamstress offered to sew bedsheets and pillowcases for the flood victims, many of whom were given mattresses but no sheets.
