The funeral for murdered Siparia Regional Corporation councillor Romona Victor will take place tomorrow, as her shattered family and community continue to struggle with the brutal circumstances of her death.
Victor, 36, was found dead alongside her husband, Rodney Ramsumair, at their Coora Road, Siparia home on Sunday.
Ramsumair is believed to have beaten Victor to death before ingesting poison.
He left behind a suicide note that investigators recovered at the scene.
Speaking to Guardian Media, Victor’s sister said the family was still completing necessary documents as they prepared to lay her to rest.
Mayor Doodnath Mayrhoo said the Siparia Regional Corporation, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, and Heritage Petroleum have all stepped forward to help cover funeral expenses and to support Victor’s grieving relatives.
Corporation staff, many of whom worked closely with her, are also receiving counselling and emotional support.
“Right now, we are washing down the park and making it fitting for her final journey,” Mayrhoo said.
“She was a pillar in the corporation, and her loss means so much to us. We are all trying to cope and give the best support we can to her family and friends during this difficult time.”
He described Victor as warm, hardworking, and fiercely committed to the people she serves.
Ramsumair’s funeral will be held separately.
