Despite the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic globally, parents in Trinidad and Tobago are being urged to encourage their daughters to join the Girl Guides Association of Trinidad and Tobago as they will be better equipped with the core values and life skills as they grow to become adults.

Chief commissioner of the Girl Guides Association of T&T Jacqueline Dolly said parents should see the advantages of the association that practiced in 150 countries.

She made the comment on Saturday as the local arm formed a motorcade and drove a 15K distance from Skinner Park, San Fernando to Marabella and back, to commemorate 100 years of the San Fernando arm of the association.

“We are the strongest in the world. Parents, this is another way for your children to learn about values and about life skills; it is another way for your children to learn other than in the classroom. We offer non-formal education, so we are asking parents to allow their children to become members of the Girls’ Guides Association,” Dolly told the gathering.

Dolly said girls become members through Brownies at the age of six and graduate into Girls’ Guide until they are 21 years old.

She said it was trying times like these, in the year 2020 with COVID-19’s bold existence, that the girls are prepared for outdoor training, which the association primarily is about.

“Learning how to cope in difficult situations, like what is happening now with the pandemic, we prepare our girls for things like that,” Dolly explained.

“Our girls know how to have life outdoors; they learn so much, so don’t deny them that. We are having many of our meetings online, the leaders are meeting the girls, but you know Girls’ Guide is about outdoors. As Girls’ Guides we have to make the best of the situation and thank God we have technology so that guiding is not going to die, if we can’t meet face to face then we meet online.”

Present for the motorcade were current Girls Guide president Jennifer Johnson, interim division commissioner Merlyn Barker-Duncan, senior members with over 60 years service, San Fernando leaders and other divisions, parents and the Girls Guides.
