Despite his best efforts to remain an involved, supportive father for his children, a 42-year-old Sangre Grande vendor was murdered on Monday.
Police said Keron Thomas got into an argument with a man on the Cunapo Southern Main Road around 11 am.
During the argument, the man stabbed Thomas once in the left side of his chest.
Thomas flagged down a car which took him to the Sangre Grande Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Speaking with Guardian Media at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, yesterday, one of Thomas’ relatives said she was told the argument stemmed from Thomas’ objection to someone selling drugs near his vending stall opposite the Sangre Grande Market.
She said the confrontation may have led to an argument and Thomas’ murder.
She said, “Like the man used to sell drugs behind the place. Like he told the man he didn’t want him selling drugs because when the police came to search the area, the police does harass him (Thomas) too. He is a person he will make peace because he knows the fella too. He didn’t take him as a threat, like he underestimated him. When Keron went to sit down, the fella stabbed him straight in his heart.”
The relative lamented how dangerous life has become, where a conversation could quickly escalate to bloodshed.
The relative, who visited the centre to identify Thomas’ body, said the sight of his body was painful and difficult to accept.
“People just crazy in this world. I can’t see a little simple disagreement, you will take a knife and stab a man in his heart. You didn’t stab him in his back, his foot anywhere, but his heart? It’s because they want to kill him.”
Police from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region II are continuing investigations.
