A Princes Town mother, accused of beating her daughter, claimed she used a pot spoon and not a broom stick to inflict the blows.

The 26-year-old Princes Town woman pleaded guilty to commiting cruelty against a child during a virtual hearing before Princes Town Magistrate Indira Misir-Gosine on Thursday.

She said she was correcting her daughter.

However, after prosecutor Sgt Marlon Bruce read the facts, the mother claimed she used a pot spoon and not a broom stick to beat the child.

Based on this, Princes Town magistrate Indira Misir-Gosine entered a not guilty plea and granted her $5,000 own bail.

She was arrested by officers of the Child Protection Unit after a report was made about the incident on July 11.

It was reported that a minor was dealt several blows to her body with a broom, which caused injury to her shoulders, forearms, wrist and belly.

The child was removed from the house and placed in the care of her father.

WPC Quashie-Gay conducted enquires and last wednesday the mother was arrested.

The exercise was headed by Supt George and ASP Sookdeo and supervised by Insp Insp Francis. The matter was adjourned to August 5.
