Finance Minister Colm Imbert says United National Congress leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is trying to mislead the public over a 25 per cent “inheritance tax” she alleges Government intends to impose.
Persad-Bissessar made the claim at a political meeting on Monday night.
In a Twitter post yesterday, Imbert stated, “The Leader of the Opposition is spreading a false and malicious rumour that the Government plans to impose a 25 per cent inheritance tax on citizens who receive money or property from the estate of a deceased person. This is a huge LIE, clearly designed to upset the voting population.”
There was no reply to texted queries to Persad-Bissessar yesterday for further information on the so-called tax or proof of her claim. Other UNC officials couldn’t provide that either.
Communication Minister Symon de Nobriga meanwhile said he had “no idea what” Persad-Bissessar was talking about. - Gail Alexander
