Last week Thurs­day, a pre­sen­ta­tion cer­e­mo­ny was held for the con­fer­ment of the Japan­ese Na­tion­al Dec­o­ra­tion, “The Or­der of the Ris­ing Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette” up­on Pro­fes­sor Bev­er­ly-Anne Carter, For­mer Di­rec­tor, Cen­tre for Lan­guage Learn­ing (CLL), Fac­ul­ty of Hu­man­i­ties and Ed­u­ca­tion, The Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies (UWI), St. Au­gus­tine.

The cer­e­mo­ny was at­tend­ed by Min­is­ter of For­eign & CARI­COM Af­fairs, Dr. Amery Browne, Jas­mine Pas­cal, Deputy Per­ma­nent Sec­re­tary, The Min­istry of Tourism, Cul­ture and the Arts, Pro­fes­sor Eliz­a­beth Wal­cott-Hack­shaw, Dean of the Faulty of Hu­man­i­ties and Ed­u­ca­tion at the Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies, and oth­er spe­cial­ly in­vit­ed guests.

Dur­ing the cer­e­mo­ny, Am­bas­sador MAT­SUB­ARA em­pha­sized that Pro­fes­sor Bev­er­ly-Anne Carter’s con­fer­ment was well de­served recog­ni­tion for her ex­cep­tion­al con­tri­bu­tion to the pro­mo­tion of aca­d­e­m­ic ex­change and mu­tu­al un­der­stand­ing be­tween Japan and Trinidad and To­ba­go.

Browne, Pro­fes­sor Carter on be­ing award­ed the Or­der of the Ris­ing Sun by the Gov­ern­ment of Japan for her con­tri­bu­tion to ad­vanc­ing Japan-Trinidad and To­ba­go re­la­tions over the years. He al­so con­veyed his grat­i­tude to Japan for their de­ci­sion to be­stow this Na­tion­al Dec­o­ra­tion on an Ed­u­ca­tor, demon­strat­ing Japan’s re­gard for the great im­pact Pro­fes­sor Carter has made on stu­dents dur­ing her time as di­rec­tor of the Cen­tre for Lan­guage Learn­ing (CLL).

Pro­fes­sor Eliz­a­beth Wal­cott-Hack­shaw re­flect­ed on Pro­fes­sor Carter’s con­tri­bu­tions at the Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies, en­dors­ing Pro­fes­sor Carter’s far-reach­ing im­pact.
