Police continued their search for two suspects connected to the kidnapping of Caribbean Airlines pilot Daniel Kawall in the hills of Maraval yesterday but were unsuccessful in locating them.
The men eluded police after they raided a hideout at Third Street, Maraval, and rescued the 59-year-old pilot.
Senior police officials yesterday described the terrain being searched as “unforgiving” but assured they would not give up the hunt.
Kawall was last seen and heard from on September 3.
His gold Toyota Hilux was later seen parked along Hololo Road, Cascade, and was reported by residents to the police hours after the victim was allegedly seen in a scuffle with some other men in the truck. The vehicle was later found burnt, at Eccles Trace, Grant Road Extension, Rousillac.
Police detained two suspects on Friday night, after they were found using Kawall’s bank card to withdraw cash from an ATM in Maraval. With these suspects in custody, the search for him intensified and led to his eventual rescue.
Police killed Rahiem Felix, 33, at the scene after they stormed the apartment where Kawall was being held. The two other suspects fled into the surrounding bushes. Meanwhile, Maraval residents are still coming to terms with the dramatic rescue.
While the community expressed relief at Kawall’s safe return, many yesterday remained shaken by the events.
Several residents who spoke to Guardian Media requested anonymity, saying they were shocked that such an incident occurred in their neighbourhood.
During a visit to the site, blood stains could be seen on the apartment door where he was kept by his abductors.
The entire apartment was ransacked, with adjacent apartments left opened at the abandoned complex.
Residents noted that surrounding units appeared abandoned and raised concerns that the site had been left unsecured by police following the operation.
In Mt Hololo, where Kawall’s abandoned Toyota Hilux was first spotted, residents said they had repeatedly alerted police but received no response.
A resident who reported the vehicle as being abandoned said claims of misinformation by police, as stated by Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro, were inaccurate.
“We saw the van Thursday morning, and the report was made to the police, but the police never came.
“Then the van disappeared. Whoever brought the van there took it back,” the resident said.
According to reports, a struggle is believed to have taken place inside Kawall’s gold Toyota Hilux on Spring Bank Avenue, St Ann’s, late Wednesday.
Neighbours said they heard screams and saw at least four men inside the vehicle, with two assailants allegedly attacking Kawall from the back seat before the van sped off.
Kawall went missing on September 3. In the days following his disappearance, his abductors issued a ransom demand of US$1 million. It remains unclear whether any payment was made. Police commissioner Allister Guevaro neither denied nor confirmed a ransom was requested.
