A landslide in Belmont has damaged a home on Belmont Valley Road.
Around 3:30 pm on Friday, a massive mound of dirt from the landslide left Kamini Mohammed and her husband, Ahamad, with a gaping hole at the back of their concrete and brick home and also damaged their wall. Fortunately, for the couple, their children and grandchildren were not injured.
Speaking to Guardian Media yesterday, Mohammed said "It was a good portion of the hill that came down at the back of the house. There is another house at the top. The wall broke down at the back of the house from the impact of the huge amount of dirt.
"It is cracked in three pieces, two pieces of iron are holding up the wall temporarily.
"Since morning friends and neighbours have been helping move the debris, we don't know how far back the landslide is but it is really big."
She said to exacerbate the situation, the rain was causing more loose dirt and debris to come down from the hill and water was entering the house by the breached wall and shattered window louvres although she had spread a large tarpaulin on top of the hill.
Mohammed said she called the ODPM (Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management) on Friday, and the Port-of-Spain City Corporation told her it didn't have any vehicles at that time but sent her a tarpaulin.
Councillor for Belmont North and West Akil Durham spoke to Guardian Media after his visit to Mohammed's home Saturday.
He said he took photographs and information regarding the landslide and forwarded them to the corporation's Disaster Management Unit, city engineers, CEO and building inspectors. Durham said when he receives the technical report from the engineers, he can be advised on how best to assist the family and to repair the home.
He said there was another landslide last week not too far away from Mohammed's home, that damaged the property of Melissa Samjawan on Albert Lane Belmont.
Durham said, however, Samjawan's house sustained minimal damage and he also sent her information along with photographs to the chief engineer and chief building inspector for them to make visits and to give him technical advice on how to proceed.
