Eminent Senior Counsel Frank Solomon has passed away.
Often regarded as one of the best local attorneys in civil ligation, Solomon died on Friday.
The news of his death reached some of his former colleagues and juniors as the celebrated at the Law Association’s annual dinner at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port-of-Spain, later that night. A moment of silence was held in his honour. Solomon’s son Daniel is also an attorney.
Contacted yesterday several attorneys heaped praises on Solomon although many only observed his superior advocacy skills, diction and vocabulary from afar.
Criminal defence attorney Wayne Sturge described Solomon as a legendary cross-examiner and an advocate extraordinaire.
Sturge said: “ Although he was intimidating in court, even to Judges, he was a jovial soul outside the courtroom. The region has lost an intellectual giant.”
“I always tell myself that if I can be half the advocate that he was, I’ll be good,” attorney Keith Scotland said.
Although Scotland said he never had the opportunity to practice with him on a case, he always observed from a distance with admiration.
“I saw him in preliminary inquiries in the High Court. Sometime you would go into a packed chamber court to see senior practitioners like Solomon make an application for an adjournment or a judgement. It was a learning experience,” Scotland said.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by Solomon’s family this week.
