A 34-year-old man was shot dead, and two others, including his pregnant girlfriend, were wounded during an early morning attack at Moonan Road, Wallerfield.
Relatives said Anthony Francis, also known as “Smalls,” was asleep when a gunman opened fire through his bedroom window shortly before 2 am on Tuesday.
His girlfriend and another man were also shot during the attack.
When Guardian Media visited the home, Francis’ younger brother, Larry Francis, said he was struggling to process the killing. He confirmed his brother had recently been released from police custody as part of enquiries into damaged vehicles in the area.
He said both of them had past run-ins with the law, but were trying to keep their activities legal by rearing livestock.
“I can't say we innocent, we live life we do things in life... but I thank God for being able to be outside and alive.”
Asked if he believed police would find those responsible, he said: “They could do their thing but I know it have a God.”
A resident said he heard gunfire and later saw one of the wounded men run into his room.
“I was just trying to figure out what was going on when one of my friends ran in the room saying he got shot. Then I noticed he had two bullet wounds in his foot. When I run across to see what was going on I see both of them (Francis and his girlfriend) on the ground bleeding.”
The woman’s one-year-old son, who was on the bed at the time of the attack, was not injured.
