A Marabella mother and her son were rushed to hospital on Thursday night after being viciously attacked by their pet dog at their home.
The Hunters Search and Rescue Team, led by captain Vallence Rambharat, received an urgent distress call around 9.30 pm that the pair had been badly bitten by their Doberman–German Shepherd mix.
Although the injured mother and son managed to retreat inside their house to escape further harm, the dog remained loose outside, preventing them from leaving to seek medical attention.
Neighbours eventually intervened and helped both victims safely out of the house. They were taken to the San Fernando General Hospital for treatment.
Members of the Hunters Search and Rescue Team—Desi Simon, Vina Narine Sinanan and Kriston Rambharat—responded to the scene along with PC Charles of the Marabella Police Station.
The team managed to secure the dog and place it in a carrier after what was described as a difficult and dangerous operation, as the animal remained extremely aggressive.
The family later contacted a veterinarian, and the dog was euthanised around 2 am.
During the operation, rescuer Desi Simon sustained several superficial bites to his hand. His injuries were described as minor.
The Hunters Search and Rescue Team commended PC Charles for his courage and also expressed gratitude to neighbours for their assistance in safely resolving the situation.
The mother and son were treated for bites to their hands and arms at the San Fernando General Hospital and later discharged. However, no one was at home when Guardian Media visited yesterday.
