Trinidad and Tobago currently is under ORANGE Level alerts for Riverine Flooding and Adverse Weather, which remain in effect until 6:00 pm on Monday 28 November 2022.
The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) upgraded its advisories at about 7:40 today, Sunday.
The Orange Level Riverine Flood Alert covers communities surrounding major and minor water courses in Trinidad.
Met Service forecasters warn that river levels are currently near or above threshold values in some parts along the major and minor watercourses with flooding ongoing in some areas.
“Rainfall accumulations are forecast to be in excess of 25 mm over the next 12 to 24 hours and can further increase the volume of already overwhelmed water courses and over spilling of banks is expected,” the latest Met Service advisory explained.
“There is now a high risk to public safety, livelihood and property in communities surrounding these watercourses,” the advisory added.
With regard to river levels, water runoff will be slow at high tide, which will be at 06:24 pm on Sunday, and at 07:51 am and 07:23 pm on Monday, November 28.
Both Trinidad’s and Tobago’s offshore marine areas are covered under the Orange Level Adverse Weather Alert.
According to forecasters, rainfall and/or showers of varying intensities are expected to continue throughout the course of today, especially during the afternoon.
“There is still a 70% - 80% (high) chance of heavy showers and thunderstorms,” Met Service forecasters warn.
The public can expect rainfall greater than 25 mm and in excess of this amount in isolated areas. In addition, gusty winds in excess of 55 km/h may be experienced, especially in the vicinity of heavy showers/thunderstorms.
The Met Service notes that street/flash flooding and localized ponding are also likely in heavy downpours, and that landslides/landslips are also possible in areas so prone.
Marine interests and coastal communities should note that seas can become agitated at times in sheltered areas.
“Monitor updates from official sources and plan safety measures, including emergency supplies of food and water,” the Met Service said, “and follow the instructions of government officials.”
The public is urged to monitor weather conditions and river levels before venturing out, and to avoid areas with flood waters. In fact, the Met Service advisory states that the public should not wade or drive through flood waters. It also reminds persons to secure loose outdoor items and livestock.
