A Government MP says early intervention by state agencies has helped spare Caroni East the usual flooding, even as heavy rains continue across much of the country.
“We are pleased that even with the major rainfall, the communities have been spared the devastating seasonal floods common in previous years,” said Caroni East MP Dr Rishad Seecheran. “This is the result of major coordinated flood mitigation efforts that were launched as soon as the Government was sworn in.”
He said areas like Chin Chin Road, Cunupia and El Carmen, which previously faced significant damage, had so far remained dry. However, “a few isolated incidents of dislocation and inconvenience” were reported, including a student at Petersville who was unable to sit a CSEC examination.
The latest Met Office forecast, issued at 10 a.m. Thursday, warned of more rain across Trinidad and Tobago, with a medium chance of heavy or thundery showers. A Riverine Flood Alert (Orange Level) and an Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) remain in effect.
Forecasters also warned of gusty winds and flash flooding near intense showers, and flagged the presence of Saharan dust, which may affect those sensitive to poor air quality.
Weather across the Lesser Antilles is expected to remain fair and hazy, with brief showers. Seas around T&T are moderate, with waves up to 2.5 metres in open waters.
Seecheran said his team continues to coordinate with authorities and urged residents to secure their homes, livestock and check on elderly neighbours.
