Member of Parliament for Naparima, Rodney Charles, is calling on the Minister of Education, Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, to work quickly towards having issues impacting the Reform Hindu School resolved, as soon as possible.

The Naparima MP also wants Minister Gadsby-Dolly to “address the major problem, which is that the adjacent new school that was left 95% complete in 2015, is now abandoned and incomplete due to non-payment to the contractors for works already completed”.

In correspondence to the Minister on the matter, complete with photos highlighting flooding at the school’s premises, the Naparima MP explains that the recent flooding episode has hampered preparations to have the school up-and-running for the new school term.

“I wish to draw your attention to the plight of parents, teachers and pupils of the Reform Hindu School located in the constituency of Naparima,” the MP wrote. “The entire school is currently flooded due to the heavy rainfall and this is significantly affecting preparation by teachers for the resumption of classes next week. The problem is further exacerbated by poor drainage works done recently in the vicinity of the school.”

MP Charles reminded the Minister that the school’s students currently are housed temporarily “in cramped conditions at a nearby temple”, which is a major disadvantage to them.

“Reform Hindu school is one of the many high performing ones in the constituency based on standardized scores and every effort should be made to ensure that students are not unduly disadvantaged,” he urged.

He added: “While some teachers may be able to do online teaching preparations for classes at home, others need to be at the school where internet facilities are available to expedite necessary online preparations.”
