A bandit, posing as a passenger, shot a 48-year-old taxi driver in the shoulder during a heist at Chase Village, Chaguanas on Friday night.
Police said Shirvington Wiseman, of Freeport, was driving his grey Nissan Tiida, valued at about $30,000, around 9 pm on Friday when the incident occurred.
Wiseman had picked up the passenger at Busy Corner, Chaguanas and was heading east along Lime Head Road when they reached the vicinity of an apartment building.
The passenger then allegedly announced a robbery and pointed what appeared to be a firearm at Wiseman.
A struggle followed and Wiseman told police he heard a loud explosion.
After the struggle, Wiseman handed over the vehicle and exited.
He subsequently noticed that he had been wounded in his right shoulder.
The suspect then drove away east along Lime Head Road in the stolen Nissan Tiida. A passer-by took Wiseman to a health facility in Chaguanas for medical attention.
Police described the suspect as a slim-built man, with a light-brown complexion and short hairstyle. He was reportedly armed with a firearm.
Police canvassed the area for CCTV cameras while an All Points Bulletin was circulated with details of the stolen vehicle and suspect.
Their efforts led Freeport CID officers to information about the whereabouts of the stolen vehicle.
The officers, along with personnel from the Freeport Charge Room and CDTF Area South, went to a dirt road off the Caparo Valley-Brasso Road, where they found the grey Nissan Tiida intact.
Checks were made in the surrounding area for the suspect, but he was not found.
The vehicle was subsequently towed to the Freeport Police Station, where Central Crime Scene Investigators examined the car for possible forensic evidence.
No arrests have yet been made and investigations are ongoing.
