Alderman Leslie Chang Fong has been sworn in as the new deputy mayor in the Point Fortin Borough Corporation.

The former Petrotrin-Trinmar employee, who is serving his second term on the Council, chairs the Buildings and Institutions Committee and is also the Vice-Chairman of the PNM Constituency Executive.

The post of deputy mayor became vacant following the August 10 general elections when Alderman Saleema Thomas succeeded the current sitting MP for Point Fortin, Kennedy Richards, as mayor. Richards won the Point Fortin seat when he contested the elections under the PNM banner.

Raised in the southern borough, Chang Fong is the second of five children, father of one and currently resides in Mahaica. An avid reader and fitness enthusiast, he aspires for Point Fortin to stand out by leading the way in sports, culture, tourism and personal development among young people.

“In fulfilling my new role, I intend to support Alderman Saleema Thomas as the first female mayor of Point Fortin including all members of the 11th Council. I want to ensure that good policymaking continues at a constituency level which aligns to that of the national executive of my party,” he said.

“I am privileged to be part of a council that continuously fosters a harmonious and cohesive relationship with the Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer and the administration”

The newly appointed deputy mayor attended the Point Fortin RC School and was a student of Presentation College in San Fernando. He went on to the then-San Fernando Technical Institute and studied to be a mechanical engineering technician. Subsequently, Chang Fong attended UTT’s Couva Campus specializing as a Petroleum Engineering Technician. He currently holds a Masters in Business Administration from Herriott-Watt University and is a first-year law student.
