Police are searching for a second suspect after Wednesday’s daring robbery at Long Circular Mall, St James, that left his accomplice dead.
Leekemus Murphy, 33, died at the scene following a shootout with security guards at the mall.
The two suspects allegedly approached a 57-year-old woman around 12.49 pm and pointed a gun at her, demanding the keys to her white Nissan Tiida.
The robbery occurred near the Royal Bank ATM, with one man running off with the victim’s handbag while Murphy got into the car and began driving away.
As the woman raised an alarm, several SWAT security guards who had been performing an escort duty nearby responded, as the suspect was stuck in slow-moving traffic.
As two officers flanked the stolen car and identified themselves to Murphy, who was in the driver’s seat, ordering him out, he reportedly pointed a gun at them and they responded by returning fire.
The car crashed into the exit gate along Long Circular Road, near the Mounted Branch, Murphy got out of the car and attempted to run, but collapsed and died at the scene.
A revolver, along with four rounds of .38 ammunition, was found near his body and secured by the officers, who later handed it over to the police.
Murphy, who had addresses at Upper Bournes Road, St James, and Picton Road, Laventille, was known to the police and was only released from prison several weeks ago.
