The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has launched an immediate investigation into the alleged leaking of sensitive information related to a recent sexual assault investigation against attorney Martin George.
The move comes in response to statements from the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago regarding the purported release of the complainant’s name, image, and the contents of their statement.
Commissioner of Police, Allister Guevarro, has ordered an urgent probe to determine how this confidential information entered the public domain.
The investigation aims to identify and hold accountable any individuals found responsible for breaching legal statutes or internal police protocols.
In a statement, the TTPS emphasised the clear legal framework governing sexual offence investigations, particularly concerning the paramount importance of protecting victims’ identity and privacy.
The TTPS highlighted that the Sexual Offences Act and related legislation are specifically designed to shield victims from further trauma and to encourage the reporting of these serious crimes.
The TTPS reiterated its unwavering commitment to upholding the law, safeguarding victims, and ensuring that all investigations, especially those involving sexual offenses, are conducted with the utmost confidentiality, professionalism, and sensitivity.
The Service also appealed to the public and media to refrain from sharing or publishing any material that could further expose or harm the complainant and to allow due process to unfold.
