Chaguanas West MP Dinesh Rambally said no one is trying to control UNC political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar as he urged her to listen to party members.
Yesterday, Rambally continued to share his concerns about several issues within the Opposition party—the United National Congress.
Rambally also dismissed the UNC leader’s attack on the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha.
He again stressed the party’s inability to win the next general election with Kamla Persad-Bissesar as political leader. According to Rambally, he does not see victory as a possibility.
While sharing his concerns on CNC3’s The Morning Brew yesterday, Rambally said the main issue was not about attacking Persad-Bissessar but rather focusing on rescuing the country.
“I have deep and grave concerns over the ability of Mrs Persad-Bissessar as the leader of the party to take us into victory in 2025.
“What we need to do right now in the UNC is strengthen ourselves to be able to win government. If we cannot win government, we are going to go down an even steeper slope in terms of bringing back this country, rescuing it from all of the social ills that it is facing right now,” he said.
Rambally first broke his silence on issues within the party last Friday at a news conference at the Divali Nagar in Chaguanas where he called for restructuring of the UNC. He also called on Persad-Bissessar to resign as leader of the party.
He also highlighted issues about financial transparency in the party and said it had become almost cult-like culture. He even slammed Persad-Bissessar for turning the UNC into a party associated with “curry duck, rum and roti.”
In a press release issued yesterday, Rambally also accused the Opposition Leader of having a new punching bag, the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha.
He said that Persad-Bissessar accused him of promoting extremism and implying that the SDMS was attempting to control her. Rambally added that if Persad-Bissessar truly loved the members of the UNC as she claims then she should start listening to their concerns about her inability to take the UNC into government.
In an exclusive interview with Guardian Media last month, Persad-Bissessar dismissed calls for her to step down saying she would not shirk her mandate or desert supporters. She also said she was fit and able to lead.
Meanwhile last evening, Mayaro MP Rushton Paray, who recently called for Persad-Bissessar to call UNC national executive elections, was asked to attend a meeting with party members in San Fernando. Tabaquite MP Anita Haynes-Alleyne and Naparima MP Rodney Charles, who both supported Paray, were also expected to attend the closed door talks.
