Former UNC Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Anil Roberts has reappeared on the political front saying that he wants to ‘douglarise’ the United National Congress.
Roberts told Guardian Media that since 2015 he’s been ‘spreading the gospel’ of the party to various constituencies along the East/West corridor which contains some of this country’s marginal seats.
“Everything that Kamla Persad-Bissessar did on policy is more beneficial to the Afro Trinidadian community than Keith Christopher Rowley…from Hague Street in Carenage straight down into Moruga and Sangre Grande, the Afro Trinidadian community is flocking to the UNC and douglarising the party,” Roberts said.
But political analyst Derek Ramsamooj says what the UNC is doing in 2019 is from an old playbook used in the Basdeo Panday era where they use non-Indo Trinidadian representatives to win over the swing voters.
“The UNC as a political party is irresponsible with respect to its hardcore traditional supporters by leading them to believe UNC’s politics, as it is, will put them in Government, if the UNC wishes to be a credible alternative to the PNM to form a Government they will have to go back to the drawing board and review what their political strategy is,” Ramsamooj said.
Ramsamooj added that the continued use of Anil Roberts shows that the UNC leader’s inability to attract new people of substance, credibility and character.
Despite being the Sports Minister when the audit into Lifesport found several discrepancies, Roberts said he was not convicted of anything.
