Junior Soca Monarch, Aaron Duncan, believes that while the Soca genre is evolving, its roots must never be forgotten.

Speaking on the Morning Brew on Thursday, Duncan said: “There is a lot of change in Soca music right now that we are all grateful for, but we must also not forget the roots of Soca music coming from Kaiso down to people like Ras Shorty I etcetera.”

The 15-year-old, who has been performing for the past 11 years said he never expected the song to gain as much traction as it did: “You never expect what would happen with a song and so you just give it your best and you just drop it. The kind of attention I got for 'Back to Basic' was overwhelming for me and everybody behind the song as well.”

As it stands at the moment, his song has gathered almost 500,000 views on Youtube. College Boy Jesse wrote the song produced by Advocate Productions.

The song was inspired by his parents and what he deemed his “little knowledge of ole time soca music”.

The music video for his song was shot in a school and showed Duncan dancing along with children his age or younger. This concept, he said: “ actually came from me. I wanted to create a concept with back to basics showing the school, showing all the children, showing what this song, old-time vibe, can do to people nowadays.”

Asked by host Hema Ramkissoon about the influences that affect today's music with subjects such as sex, Duncan said: “Those things are not my beat. As a youth, it would be kinda let people hear you singing about that, so I rather push positive music. I rather push music that even though it saying good lyrics, positive lyrics, you can still dance and get on the same way people would get on to that song.”
