A special criminal court to provide "swift justice," is expected to be established to deal with with firearm, kidnapping and narcotic offences. It would be set up by the judiciary to relieve the case burden on the magistrates' courts, Finance Minister Winston Dookeran announced in yesterday's budget presentation. Dookeran also announced the expected construction of the Sangre Grande Magistrates' Court and the Arima Judicial Complex. He said the courts had been long overdue, with only a few magistrates sitting to hear hundreds of cases on any given day.
He also stated that progress was being made in acquiring sites for these projects. Also new to the administration of justice would be the introduction of a "Victims of Crime Support" programme, Dookeran said. "The victims require so much emotional and psychological help and often have nowhere to turn for ongoing support," he said. The initiative will be conducted in a joint effort with the Ministry of the People and the Ministry of National Security.
