More details have emerged into the shooting death of Municipal Police officer Jamal Charles, who was shot to death yesterday.
Police are now confirming his colleagues had been playing with their firearms when the incident occurred.
Charles was on guard duty in the security booth at the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government office at Kent House, Long Circular Road Extension, around 3.15 pm on Wednesday.
According to the official police report, two of his fellow officers had been pointing their weapons at Charles treating them “as a plaything” when one of them went off, hitting him in the face.
Emergency responders, including the Maraval Police and a district medical officer, were called, but Charles was declared dead at the scene.
Investigators collected a pistol, handcuff case, duty belt, and other accessories from one of the officers involved.
One of the officers who was on duty at the time was taken to hospital after going into shock following the shooting.
Guardian Media understands Charles graduated from police academy in March this year.
Enquiries are ongoing by the Maraval Police and Homicide Bureau Region I.
