More de­tails have emerged in­to the shoot­ing death of Mu­nic­i­pal Po­lice of­fi­cer Ja­mal Charles, who was shot to death yes­ter­day.

Po­lice are now con­firm­ing his col­leagues had been play­ing with their firearms when the in­ci­dent oc­curred.

Charles was on guard du­ty in the se­cu­ri­ty booth at the Min­istry of Rur­al De­vel­op­ment and Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment of­fice at Kent House, Long Cir­cu­lar Road Ex­ten­sion, around 3.15 pm on Wednes­day.

Ac­cord­ing to the of­fi­cial po­lice re­port, two of his fel­low of­fi­cers had been point­ing their weapons at Charles treat­ing them “as a play­thing” when one of them went off, hit­ting him in the face.

Emer­gency re­spon­ders, in­clud­ing the Mar­aval Po­lice and a dis­trict med­ical of­fi­cer, were called, but Charles was de­clared dead at the scene.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors col­lect­ed a pis­tol, hand­cuff case, du­ty belt, and oth­er ac­ces­sories from one of the of­fi­cers in­volved. 

One of the of­fi­cers who was on du­ty at the time was tak­en to hos­pi­tal af­ter go­ing in­to shock fol­low­ing the shoot­ing.
