A want­ed man opened fire on po­lice of­fi­cers af­ter they found him stand­ing in a makeshift camp in Paramin.

He man­aged to es­cape de­spite po­lice of­fi­cers re­turn­ing fire.

How­ev­er, po­lice of­fi­cers seized one AR15 ri­fle fit­ted with a mag­a­zine and three rounds of 5.56 am­mu­ni­tion.

A search of the makeshift camp which was off Cameron Road of­fi­cers found and seized one 12 gauge shot­gun with one round of 12 gauge am­mu­ni­tion, one Fobus pis­tol hol­ster, a ski mask, a cam­ou­flage jer­sey, one head lamp and two cell­phones.

Ac­cord­ing to a po­lice re­port, at about 6.30 pm on Wednes­day a team of of­fi­cers of the West­ern Di­vi­sion Task Force led by Ago Sgt Bris­bane and su­per­vised by Ago Cpl Do­minique re­spond­ed to a re­port of gun­shots heard in the Cameron area.

The of­fi­cers re­spond­ed and made their way about 100 me­tres off the road­way to a makeshift camp where they saw the man who they iden­ti­fied by name and as a "want­ed man" stand­ing close to the camp armed with an AR15 ri­fle.

Po­lice said as they at­tempt­ed to ap­proach him he opened fire forc­ing them to shoot at him, how­ev­er, he es­caped by jump­ing off a steep slope which led to a thick forest­ed area. An ex­ten­sive search was sub­se­quent­ly con­duct­ed how­ev­er the sus­pect was not found.

Po­lice said the man is want­ed on sev­er­al out­stand­ing war­rants in­clud­ing mur­der, pos­ses­sion of firearm, am­mu­ni­tion and nar­cotics traf­fick­ing.
