A team from the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) led by acting CEO, Kelvin Romain, met with residents of Beetham Gardens on Wednesday, to discuss issues related to sewage overflows affecting the area.
Members of the community have been adversely affected by emergency repairs currently ongoing at the Beetham Wastewater Treatment Plant, which has led to instances of overflows in parts of lower Port of Spain, including Beetham Gardens. Romain toured the area and had a first-hand account of some of the challenges faced by residents and later met with the residents at the Beetham Gardens Community Centre.
The acting CEO gave an assurance that WASA will maintain a daily presence in the area to ensure ongoing pumping activity, in order to reduce the overflows with sanitization activated where necessary. He indicated that the replacement of compromised sewerage lines, as well as a robust leak reduction exercise will also be implemented in the short-term to bring immediate relief to the residents affected. Romain committed to return to the area in two weeks, making himself available to provide and receive an update from the residents of Beetham Gardens.
