WHO advises of dangerous paediatric medicines

The Min­istry of Health has is­sued a warn­ing to the pub­lic of med­ical prod­ucts in­clud­ing parac­eta­mol drops and parac­eta­mol syrup that iden­ti­fy sub­stan­dard (con­t­a­m­i­nat­ed) pae­di­atric med­i­cines in the World Health Or­gan­i­sa­tion (WHO) re­gions of Africa, South East Asia and Cen­tral Asia.

 

The Med­ical Prod­uct Alert was is­sued by the WHO.

 

The glob­al body ad­vised that the con­t­a­m­i­nat­ed med­i­cines con­tain un­ac­cept­able amounts of di­eth­yl­ene gly­col and eth­yl­ene gly­col and are con­sid­ered un­safe, es­pe­cial­ly for chil­dren and thus, may re­sult in se­ri­ous in­jury or death.

 

A re­lease from the Min­istry of Health stat­ed these prod­ucts are not reg­is­tered for use in Trinidad and To­ba­go.

 

It went fur­ther to state, "In this re­gard, out of an abun­dance of cau­tion, the MoH ad­vis­es that if you are in pos­ses­sion of these prod­ucts, they should not be used and should be re­turned to the point of sale."

 

The prod­ucts, iden­ti­fied be­low, are man­u­fac­tured in In­dia and In­done­sia:
