The loan amount, interest and legal fees owed by former T&T and Manchester United footballer Dwight Yorke have all been repaid to Chutney Soca Monarch Neval Chatelal.
Chatelal confirmed the repayment to the T&T Guardian in a telephone conversation late last night.
The payments were made within days of Yorke being served legal documents in which he was sued by Chatelal for $250,000 that was lent last March.
"All I wish to say at this time is that the matter was settled between Monday and Tuesday and all monies were returned, including the interest and legal fees. That is all I wish to say, as I don't wish to drag on this matter any further," Chatelal said.
On Saturday before hosting his Seas The Moment fete at Pigeon Point Heritage Park in Tobago, Yorke was served legal documents seeking to recover the sum.
Chatelal claimed he had been pleading unsuccessfully since May last year with Yorke to repay it, according to documents filed in the San Fernando High Court last week.
In the court documents, Chatelal said following the fete Yorke held in Tobago last March, known as Island Vibe, Yorke approached him to borrow some money. On March 7 last year, Chatelal deposited the $250,000 into the Dwight Yorke Foundation Account held at Republic Bank.
After two months passed, when Yorke was allegedly supposed to repay all the money, Chatelal contacted him. Interest of $50,000 was reportedly paid but after further delays to receive the remainder of money owed, Chatelal hired former attorney general Anand Ramlogan SC.
A pre-action protocol letter was sent to Yorke on January 15 where he was “invited to amicably settle the matter.” There was no response to that letter and the lawsuit was filed at the San Fernando High Court, where it was listed before Justice Ricky Rahim.
When asked to comment on the issue during a tour of the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago yesterday, Yorke said as far as he was concerned the matter is closed. However, he said he never signed any contractual agreement with Chatelal and never met him before. Yorke said it was one of his friends who would have entered into an arrangement with Chatelal which he (Yorke) was unaware of.
