Three-year-old Apoc­a­lypse, su­perbly rid­den by lead­ing rid­er Bri­an Boodram­s­ing, got up in the fi­nal stride to end the un­beat­en run of Juice Man and lead home a 1-2-3 for the three-year-olds in this year’s Trinre Caribbean Cham­pi­on Stakes over 1,800 me­tres on the main track at San­ta Rosa Park, Ari­ma, yes­ter­day.

In what was one of the most an­tic­i­pat­ed Caribbean Cham­pi­on Stakes in decades an ex­cit­ing race was on the card but none would have xpect­ed the thriller which was seen yes­ter­day at the Trinre Day at The Races.

Three thor­ough­breds flashed past the post in what was con­sid­ered the “Bat­tle of The Gen­er­a­tions” and the “Bat­tle of the Un­beat­en Hors­es.”

Pun­ters yes­ter­day made the John O’Brien-trained four-year-old colt Gen­er­al JN the 4-5 favourite to pre­vail and punt­ed the Glenn Mendez-trained three-year-old colt Juice Man in­to even-mon­ey as the sec­ond favourite. Even­tu­al win­ner and Der­by sec­ond-placed Apoc­a­lypse was next in the bet­ting at odds of 9-2.

When the starter sent the eight-horse field on their way, a loud roar was heard as Ricky Jadoo sent Juice Man straight in­to the lead with Gen­er­al JN in pur­suit in sec­ond and Mas­ter of War close up in third. These were fol­lowed by Cae­sar Coun­try and Re­gal In­ten­sion, with Steak­ing Far next while Boodram­s­ing an­chored Apoc­a­lypse at the rear.

Go­ing down the back-straight, the two prin­ci­pals Juice Man and Gen­er­al JN held sway as they opened a gap of 1 ? length on the near­est pur­suer Mas­ter of War, with sev­en lengths to the fourth horse Cae­sar Coun­try.

Go­ing to the far turn, Juice Man still held sway from Gen­er­al JN as mas­ter of War was com­ing un­der pres­sure, with Mak­ing Head­line im­prov­ing along with Apoc­a­lypse.

On the cor­ner, Juice Man still held the up­per-hand as Gen­er­al JN could not get by him but a new threat ap­peared in Mak­ing Head­lines, who pro­gressed to chal­lenge for the lead and looked set to go by Juice Man. It was here that Bri­an Boodram­s­ing un­leashed Apoc­a­lypse with a well timed run, but get­ting by the gal­lant and tal­ent­ed Juice Man was prov­ing a dif­fi­cult propo­si­tion.

How­ev­er, with 100 me­tres left and the Grand Stand at San­ta Rosa Park in up­roar, Jadoo got Juice Man to bat­tle back as Mak­ing Head­line and Nela Mo­hammed tried to snatch vic­to­ry. But just as every­one thought Juice Man had won that bat­tle, Apoc­a­lypse wore him down on the out­side to win in a three-way fin­ish by a head. Juice Man was a short-head in front of Mak­ing Head­lines at the line with Mas­ter of War back in fourth and Gen­er­al JN well beat­en in fifth.

Own­er of the vic­to­ri­ous Apoc­a­lypse An­tho­ny Wight was a proud man, as he al­so led in Bat­tle Cry to vic­to­ry in the event in 2017 for train­er John O’Brien. Bri­an Boodram­s­ing has now rid­den the win­ner of this event of three oc­ca­sions in the past four years. Boodram­s­ing was aboard Mag­i­cal Vic­to­ry in 2016.

The win­ner record­ed the time of 1:53.13 for the trip.

Rid­ing ho­n­ours on day were shared amongst Ronald Ali, Jovi­ka Boodram­s­ing and Bri­an Boodram­s­ing, who both rode two win­ners. Ali land­ed a dou­ble for own­er/train­er Rolf Bar­to­lo with Si­mon Pe­ter and Rio Pon­ti. Train­ing Ho­n­ours for the day were al­so shared be­tween O’Brien and Bar­to­lo.
