Former national champion Clint Bachan came out of retirement for the recent national qualifiers and proved that class is permanent in winning the recent Open Invitational 10-ball billiards tournament in Tobago on Tuesday evening.
Bachan, who hails from Caroni, beat Vishaal Singh in the race to three final to lift the trophy and $2,000 cash prize.
The tournament, which was organised to coincide with the visit of the Guyana team, was held at Big Dawg Billiards in Bon Accord, a venue which boasts two spanking new 9-foot tournament-style tables.
Veteran player Allan James of Tobago, the man behind the Tobago leg of Guyana's tour, copped third place.
On Monday, a team tournament was held with the Guyana team taking on a representative Tobago team in a race to four matches. The match consisted of six single games and one doubles game, each game a race to three.
The Tobago team featured Allan James, Ancil Pajotte, Rodney Thomas, Dexter Taylor, Keron Adams and three invited players from Trinidad, Adrian Mora, Fidel Mohammed and Ayoub Mohammed. Damian Douglas and Everald Alexander, who were also part of the Tobago team, did not feature in the team tournament but played in the 10-ball event.
Guyana, also called the Pool Jaguars, bounced back from a 1-3 deficit to seal the match 4-3. Kamil Hussain beat A. Mohammed 3-2 in the first encounter.
Mora then took out Steven Persaud in three straight; the doubles pair of Pajotte and Adams lost to Ryan Baksh and Ronald Bridgemohan 1-3; Rodney Thomas won his game against Abdool Salim 3-1; Taylor was swept by Guyana’s best tour player Sean De Souza; James beat Ryan Rambalak 3-2 and in the deciding game F. Mohammed went under to Anthony Xavier in three frames.
After the two days of competition, Xavier was named most outstanding player.
The Guyana team departed Trinidad on Wednesday.
