TT&T’s Tokyo Olympic representatives Kion Benjamin (Memphis Pioneers) and Che Lara (Abilene Wildcats) produced some outstanding performances at the TTAMA Masters Development Meet No2 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on Saturday, March 9.
Benjamin won the Men’s Open 100m race in 10.47 seconds in his first competition of the 2024 outdoor season. He ran the lead-off leg for T&T’s 4x100m relay team at the Tokyo Olympics Games in 2021. The 2018 World U20 Championships 4x100m finalist finished ahead of Elijah Joseph of Mounting Eagles (10.61) and Phoenix’s Jaden De Souza (10.82). Former World Under 20 100m champion and world record holder Darryl Brown, now a masters competitor, was fourth in 10.98. Benjamin had to settle for second in the 200m to Joseph (21.38 to 21.44).
Lara topped the Men’s Open 400m field winning the final section in 47.47 in a close finish ahead of his clubmate Joshua St Clair (47.67) and Concorde’s Nickili Lewis (47.68. Lara was a reserve member of T&T’s men’s 4x400m team which finished eighth in the finals in Tokyo.
Hezekiel Romeo (Appoloosa), 2011 World Youth Shot Put finalist and Commonwealth Youth Games bronze medallist, was the class of the Men’s Open Shot Put, taking the crown with an 18.43m effort. Throws coach Wade Franklyn (Zenith) was the top Masters competitor in second (12.10) with UWI’s Devon Murray in third 11.80.
Anthony Diaz (Pt Fortin New Jets), 2022 Carifta silver medallist and World Under 20 competitor, outdid his rivals in the Men’s Open Javelin with a winning effort of 62.84m.
Susan Garcia, Rondel Paul, Akeela Oliver, Nicole Alleyne-Noregia, Ian Andrews, and Noemi Theodore were all double champions at the meet.
Garcia won the Women’s Open Discus (23.97m) and Javelin (19.59). Garcia, who turns 60 this year, won the discus ahead of fellow master Noelyn Toby-Davis (22.54), 20-year-old Makayla Hope of UWI (19.99), and Shot Put winner Ariel Bernard (19.49).
Paul ran away with the men’s 35-49 100m (11.70) and 200m (23.35) sprint titles. Murrien Mitchell and Renny Caby had to settle second and third spots in both races.
Oliver landed the women’s 35-49 100m/200m top spots in 13.51 and 28.13 seconds respectively. In the shorter sprint, she finished ahead of 2015 World Masters 4x100m champion and World record holder Ayanna Hutchinson-Britton.
Alleyne-Noregia enjoyed similar successes in the Women’s 50-plus 100m (16.24) and 200m (35.24) races. Susannah Joefield was runner-up on each occasion.
Andrews matched that feat in the Men’s 50-plus age division claiming the 100m (12.98) and 200m (27.38) crowns. Alleyne-Noreiga’s husband Rumaldo was second in the 100m and third in the 200m. Eighty-six-year-old Robert Stevenson was fifth (17.88) ahead of 77-year-old Oswald Rogers (17.90). Stevenson was also fourth in the 200m (38.59). Rogers was tenth in the Men’s Open Long Jump (2.62), just behind 75-year-old Terrance Skinner (3.24).
Theodore took home the Women’s 100m/200m double. The Phoenix lady clocked times of 12.68 and 26.10 respectively.
Para-athletes Johan Biput (UWI) and Isaiah Williams (MAP) also participated in the meet.
The Masters Development Meet 2 was hosted by the T&T Association of Masters Athletics. Meet No 1 was held on January 27. Meet No 3 is carded for Sun, March 31.
Masters athletes are those 35 years and over. Local masters competitors are striving to achieve the qualifying standards for the 2024 World Outdoor Masters Track and Field Championships scheduled for Gothenburg, Sweden from August 13-25.
Trinidad and Tobago won three medals at the 2022 edition of the meet in Tampere, Finland. Gwendolyn Smith captured gold in the Women’s 55-59 Javelin and silver in the Shot Put and throws Pentathlon.
