National cyclist Teniel Campbell finished 23rd from a field of 44 cyclists in the women's Elite individual time trial when the UCI World Road Cycling Championships pedalled off at the Kigali BK Arena, and ended at Kigali Convention Centre, Rwanda, on Sunday.
The 27-year-old completed the 31.2 kilometres course in 48 minutes, 25.09 seconds to finish five minutes, 15.75 seconds behind the gold medal winner, Marlen Reusser of Switzerland, who took gold in 43:09.34 with Holland's Anna Van Der Breggen taking the silver medal in 44:01.23 and her countrywoman Demi Vollering, the silver in 44:14.07.
So far this season, Campbell has two bronze medals at the Pan American Continental Cycling Champions, in the Time Trial and Road Race, while she was second in the Grote Prijs Yvonne Reynders in Belgium last month.
Today, in the men's Under-23 individual time trial to be contested over 31.2 km, T&T's Jadian Neaves, 19, will be one of 61 competitors going after a podium finish.
The African is hosting the UCI Road World Championships for the first time, with the capital of Rwanda, Kigali, providing the stage for this historic week of racing (September 21-28).
Already known for its annual Tour du Rwanda, the African nation in the Great Rift Valley of East Africa now welcomes Junior, U-23 and Elite athletes racing for the prestigious rainbow jersey.
It isn’t for nothing that Rwanda is nicknamed the “land of a thousand hills”, and for many riders it will be their first experience riding on this challenging terrain.
These UCI Road World Championships are another step in the globalisation of cycling and come at a time when African riders are increasingly making international headlines.
They are also an opportunity and added motivation for the younger generation of African riders to compete and shine on the global stage.
To this end, the UCI, its World Cycling Centre (WCC) and the UCI WCC Continental Development Satellite in Paarl, South Africa, have been preparing the most talented for this significant event with a dedicated Africa 2025 strategy.
Another new feature at the 2025 UCI Road World Championships will be the first separate races for Women U-23 riders. Although UCI world titles (individual time trial and road race) have been awarded for this category since 2022 in Wollongong, Australia, until now, they have raced alongside the Women Elite.
