Sisters Em-Miryam and Abba Campbell-Smith, as well as the Mohammed siblings of Naomi and Lily, have advanced to the main draw of the COTECC Under-14 Summer Bowl Tennis Tournament, taking place at the National Racquet Centre (NRC) on Orange Grove Road in Tacarigua.
The pairs are among eight girls to have earned qualifying berths from a round-robin play-off over the weekend, with six girls set to contest the consolation division. Among the boys, 12 will also contest the main draw, with as many to compete in the consolation division. The main draw starts on Monday at the NRC.
On the final day Sunday, Abba, who defeated the other Mohammed sister Karissa 4-0, 4-1 on Saturday got a walk-over victory over Anneleise Orr to top her group, while her sister Em Miryam warmed up for today's main draw start with convincing 4-1, 4-0 triumph over Suri Ramcharan.
Lily though had a painstaking 4-0, 4-0 win over her sister Karissa on court seven. Naomi did not see action yesterday but she confirmed the top spot in her group with a confidence-boosting victory over Em-Miryam.
Meanwhile, Makeda Bain also joined the main draw with a sweat-less 4-1, 4-0 victory over Taegan Yeates under the sweltering 9 am sun, along with third-seeded Shiloh Walker who prevailed over St Luicia's Jaelyn Henry 4-1, 5-3. Cyra Ramcharan just missed out on a main draw place, despite prevailing over Elyse Ferguson in straight sets 5-4(3), 4-2.
The girls' main draw includes the Campbell-Smith and Mohammed siblings, as well as Bain, Walker, Henry and Yeates while the consolation draw will feature Ramcharan, Karissa Mohammed, Suri Ramcharan, Anya Romany, Ferguson and Orr.
Among the boys' main draw are Barbados' Dimitri Kirfton, Nirav Dougdeen, Brandon Bridgewater of Curacao, Darius Rahaman, Mateo Gutierrez of El Salvador, Alhil Cyril of St Lucia, Javan Garibana, Jacob Jacelon, Ethan Warner (Barbados), Christopher Khan, Josiah Hills and Zane Kirtion of Barbados.
In action Sunday, Kirton (Dimitri) benefitted from a walk-over win of Jaiden Gormandy, while Hills clobbered Brian Harricharan in straight sets 4-0, 4-1 to seal his entry into Monday's draw.
Fourth-seeded Dougdeen was also victorious, disposing of Novak Malcolm 4-0, 4-0, and Warner whipped Jack Brown 4-2, 4-0 on court five.
