T&T's Miscellaneous Police FC had a shambolic second-half defensive display and fell to a 4-1 loss to Jamaica's Cavalier FC to remain winless after two matches in Group A of the 2024 Concacaf Caribbean Cup at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica on August 29.
For Cavalier FC, who had T&T's Kaiel Auvray in its starting line-up, Shaquille Stein opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he ran onto a through ball from Christopher Ainsworth between Police FC's Mekeil Williams and Robert Primus to beat advancing goalkeeper Adrian Foncette with a right-footed strike to his left.
Auvray almost put the host further ahead, but following a surging run into the left side of the 18-yard box, his shot on target was deflected behind for a corner by a lunging tackle from international team-mate Alvin Jones.
Soon after, Jones turned provider when his right-footed centre from a William feed was met by a diving header from veteran striker Kevon Woodley to even up the score at 1-1.
On the resumption, Cavalier FC was quick to settle and created a few nervous moments for the lacklustre Police defence before Stein regained the lead for the hosts in the 65th inside the penalty area after Ainsworth again started the build-up through the left side before Dwayne Atkinson redirected the ball in the box to pick up the assist.
Despite being outplayed for most parts, Woodley almost got Police level for the second time in the match but this time his lunging right-footed effort from another Jones cross, deflected off the body of goalkeeper Jeadine White and onto the crossbar. His teammate Ezekiel Kesar also hit the crossbar from a cheeky Alvin Jones cross outside the left boot.
Cavalier FC put the game beyond reach when Dwayne Atkinson penned his name on the scoresheet in the 77th by placing the finishing touch on a counterattack, with a first post finish past Foncette.
Two minutes into additional time, Atkinson scored his second of the night with a right-footed volley after Foncette punched out a corner kick straight into his path at the top of the 18-yard box.
With the win, Cavalier FC who blanked fellow Jamaicans Mount Pleasant 2-0 in the tournament opener improved to a maximum of six points, three ahead of their local rivals and meet Real Hope FA of Haiti in its next challenge on September 17 in Kingston.
Police FC, meanwhile stayed on one point from their 1-1 draw with Real Hope at the same venue last week and will now return home to Jamaica's Arnett Gardens FC, the Caribbean Football Union Club Shield winners on September 19 followed by another home tie with Mount Pleasant on September 26.
Noreiga and AC Port-of-Spain (AC PoS) will return home to face Antigua and Barbuda’s Jennings Grenades FC on September 17 at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, while Moca will seek to continue its unbeaten start when it hosts Ouanaminthe FC on September 18. Last night, Cibao and Grenades were scheduled to clash.
In Group B, Dominican Republic duo, Moca FC and Cibao FC share the lead with four points each from two matches followed by Haiti's Ouanaminthe FC and T&T champions AC PoS with a point apiece.
This after, AC PoS squandered a 2-0 lead in a 3-2 loss away to Moca FC on Wednesday night after a 1-1 draw with the Haitians in their opener. AC PoS returns home to face Antigua and Barbuda’s Jennings Grenades FC, the CFU Club Shield runners-up on September 17 before hosting Cibao on September 24.
At the end of the two round-robin groups, the top two teams will advance to the semifinals, followed by the finals of the second edition of the regional cup competition, which serves as a qualifier for the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup and crowns the Caribbean’s club champion.
