The Heatwave pair of Phillip Clarke and Josias Velasquez sealed the top positions in the Elite and Under-23 Men categories when the T&T Cycling Federation held its Riad Race Cycle Challenge from the South Oropouche Roundabout to La Brea/Vessigny and back at the weekend (February 7-8).
Clarke in 2023 claimed the gold medal in the very same event, alongside Kerri Montano. On Sunday last, Phillip returned to dominate for a second consecutive time, as he competed in a field of 13 riders who were required to cover a distance of 195.68 kilometres.
His return to the spot where they started was done after four hours, 37 minutes and 339 seconds. He was later joined by his Heatwave colleague Velasquez, sealing the runner-up position. Ainsley Gay, riding for the Evolution Cycling Academy, was third, while the trio of Ben Britto (Raiders Cycle & Multi Sport), Dimitri James (Raiders Cycle & Multi Sport), and Marc Ogiste (Heatwave) rounded off the top six finishers.
Meanwhile, Elisha Greene Jr continued to follow in the footsteps of his father, Elisha Greene Sr, on the bike by taking the gold medal among the juveniles who were required to complete a shorter distance of 64.16 kilometres. The junior Greene’s crowning moment came after an hour, 25 minutes and 144 seconds for Team Colesafety Cycling.
Valkyries’ Theon Kennedy later crossed the finish line for the second-place spot before Hummingbird International’s Adrian Sanchez secured third.
