Jonathan Farinha and Lalenii Grant head the list of local athletes who claimed gold at the Collegiate Conference Outdoor Championships in the USA recently.
Farinha blazed his way to the Cross Road League men’s 200 metres title in Indiana in early May, in a time of 20.96 seconds. The Huntington University student’s winning time was shy of the 20.76 clocking he posted in the heats. He then captured his second gold when he and his twin brother Nathan were on the winning 4x100m (39.73). Nathan reached the 100m final after his 10.59 in the preliminary round. However, he was disqualified in the medal race.
Grant won the America East Conference women’s discus title in Durham, New Hampshire, on May 4. The University of Albany first-year student secured the top spot with 49.83m on her fourth attempt. The Scarborough Seventh Day Adventist (SDA)/Scarborough Secondary graduate opened with 47.91m and fouled her next two throws before improving to 49.83. She recorded 47.57 in the fifth round, while her sixth and final attempt was ruled foul. Grant dominated the field, as each of her registered throws exceeded the distance of silver medallist Emma Reaves (New Hampshire), 45.77, and third-placer Vermont’s Samantha Alexander, 40.78.
Compatriot and schoolmate Nattyl Lindo was 11th (35.76). Lindon missed out on a medal in the shot put, finishing in fourth (13.13). The 2025 Carifta Girls Under-20 shot put sixth-placer was also 10th in the hammer throw (46.64). Grant and Lindo’s points contributed to Albany winning the overall women’s trophy with 197 points. Albany also secured the men’s crown (163.5).
Omari Lewis and Revel Webster were members of Liberty’s 4x100m team which won the Conference USA (CUSA) gold in Tennessee from May 16-18. Liberty was first across the line in 39.27.
Lewis was also second in the 100m (10.17) and third in the 200m (20.53). Webster was seventh in the 200m (21.16) after running a personal best of 21.00 in the heats. Webster’s sister Reece was second in the women’s 100m (11.37) with Lewis’ sister Akilah in third (11.44).
The Lewis and Webster siblings are members of Concorde Athletic Club.
Devin Augustine and Kion Benjamin helped Minnesota to take the men’s 4x100m crown at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Oregon in a quick time of 38.54. Augustine missed out on a second gold when he was second in the 200m (20.87). The Point Fortin New Jets sprinter was quicker in the preliminary round (20.47). He was also seventh in the 100m (10.37) after running 10.27 in the heats. Benjamin was 10th (10.34) and 12th (20.89) in the 100m and 200m heats.
Augustine, who competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics, won the 2024 Big Ten Outdoor 100m sprint.
Another Paris Olympian, Leah Bertrand, landed bronze in the women’s 4x100m with the Ohio State team, which clocked 45.68. Bertrand surrendered her women’s 100m crown when the 2024 winner ended in fourth in 10.20. The Olympic semifinalist was seventh in the 200m (23.36). The Simplex sprinter clocked 22.99 in the qualifying round.
De Paul’s Dominic Cole collected gold with his school’s men’s 4x100m squad (39.55). The Abilene Wildcats competitor was also runner-up in the 200m (21.27) and finished fourth in the 100m (10.58). Cole clocked 21.20 in the preliminaries.
