Chloe Fraser in action during the Women’s Singles competition at the CRTTF Senior Championships at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Gymnasium in Wildey, St Michael.

T&T's Chloe Fraser just missed out on a place in the final of the Women’s Singles at the Caribbean regional Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) Senior Championships at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Gymnasium in Wildey, St Michael Sunday (June 22).

The T&T talent seemed well on her way to the title match after delivering a top-class display to defeat Cuba’s Olympian Daniela Fonseca 4-2 in a quarterfinal contest.

She got the perfect start in match one of the quarterfinals, holding off Fonseca 12-10. Now confident, she rushed to a 2-0 advantage in the contest before Fonseca disrupted her free flow with a 15-13 triumph in the third set, cutting her lead in half 2-1.

But the France-based Fraser, who repeated as the winner of the Women's Open of the T&T Table Tennis Association Super Singles, jumped further ahead in the fluctuating affair 3-1 by beating her counterpart in the fourth set 11-9. And a second time, Fonseca stormed back by narrowing the scoreline to 3-2 with a 12-10 set win.

Fraser then sealed the overall win four games to two (4-2) and confirmed her entry into the round of four semifinals by beating Fonseca 11-9 in the sixth set.

However, it increased the stakes and competition of the tournament, putting her in line with Alondra Rodriguez of Puerto Rico. The match went seven sets before Fraser surrendered 3-4 (7-11, 11-6, 9-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-7, 9-11) to just miss a berth in the final.

Fraser said she may have been too passive in the encounter when contacted yesterday.

"I think in the first two games, I was a bit too passive. I let her attack too much, and I think it was because I was serving too short. So, I started to change, and I won three games, but as a Puerto Rican, she changed and adapted well to suit, so she was the better player in the seventh set," Fraser said.

"She also had a very good coach. Her coach is the father of the number 10 player in the world, so she had a good coach telling her what to do point by point. So, she was able to change her game and adapt to whatever I was sending at her."

Fraser considered one of T&T's better players, believes that despite the losing result, the Puerto Rican can be beaten by her.

"I can beat her, that's what I believe because last year we played in the round of 16 and I lost on the same score 4-3, 11-9, it was a very close game. I don't see her as a better player, but today she was the better player. I was a bit too passive for most of the tournament, I was so afraid to take some shots and to take some risks," Fraser said.

Despite the result in that contest, both the T&T men's and women's teams finished third overall and qualified for the ITTF Pan American Championships in October in the United States.

The T&T men's team comprises Derron Douglas, Aaron Wilson, Yuvraaj Dookram, and Malik Gopaul. The coach is Aaron Edwards. The women's team features Fraser, Rheann Chung, Imani Edwards Taylor and Jordan Thong.
