Dwight Hayling was named 'Man-of-the-Match' after he led Arima Elites to a nail-biting seven-run win over Headquarters North Red Rockets to secure their first title in the T&T Fire Service Northern Division 12 Overs Windball Cricket Championship Final hosted by the T&T Fire Service Cricket Club at Constantine Park, Tunapuna, on Saturday.
Arima Elites won the toss and chose to bat first and posted 88 for the loss of six wickets aided by a top score of 19 extras, while Elwin Mitchell got 17, Jesse Martinez 15, Rennison Ramsey 13, and Hayling 11 as they made a challenging total.
Bowling for five-time finalist Red Rockets, the quartet of Kurt Quamina, Roger Gooding, Giovanni Sylvester and Erol Burke each picked up one wicket.
In their run chase, Red Rockets just fell short by seven runs despite the valiant efforts of Sylvester, who made a battling 39 runs from 35 balls and shared three key partnerships: first of 11 runs with fellow opener Ravi Quamina, then 20 with Adasha Norton, who made ten, and finally, all 30 with Kiel Murray, in the losing effort with 11 runs coming via extras.
For Arima Elites, Hayling bowled three tight overs and took two wickets for nine runs, including the vital scalp of Sylvester, while Mitchell, Kelvin Headley and Martinez got one wicket each.
For Red Rockets, the loss extended their winless record in the tournament finals to five, having also ended as runner-up in 2013, 2017, 2018 and 2024.
In the first semifinal on Sunday, April 26, Headquarters North Red Rockets secured a spot in the title match for the fifth time after battling past the 8-4 Blazers by 11 runs while Arima Elites dumped five-time winners Headquarters Blue Steel by 43 runs.
Prior to the final on Saturday, the third-place match, Blue Steel secured the third spot by beating the 8-4 Blazers by 40 runs.
