Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has congratulated Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell on his National Democratic Congress’ resounding electoral victory, adding “#YellowIsTheCode” to a message pledging closer ties between the two countries.
Speaking on behalf of the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago last night, Persad-Bissessar also congratulated Grenadians on exercising their democratic rights and described the outcome as an endorsement of Mitchell’s leadership.
“This decisive mandate reflects the confidence and trust that the people of Grenada have placed in Prime Minister Mitchell’s leadership, his policies and his vision for the future of their nation,” she said.
Her congratulations followed yesterday’s general election, where provisional figures last evening placed the NDC ahead in 14 of Grenada’s 15 constituencies. The opposition New National Party, led by Emmalin Pierre, was ahead in St George North West as counting continued.
This returns Mitchell for a second consecutive term with a substantially stronger parliamentary position than in 2022, when the NDC won nine seats against the NNP’s six. That election ended the administration led by former prime minister Keith Mitchell and brought Dickon Mitchell to office.
In her statement, Persad-Bissessar emphasised the longstanding relationship between Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada, pointing to connections forged through generations of interaction between their people.
“Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada share deep historical, cultural and economic ties, built upon generations of friendship, mutual respect and cooperation,” she said.
She pledged to build on those connections during Mitchell’s new term, with a focus on both bilateral relations and cooperation within the wider Caribbean.
“As close neighbours, valued friends and Caricom brothers, we look forward to further strengthening our bilateral relationship, deepening regional cooperation and advancing our shared interests for the benefit of our citizens,” Persad-Bissessar said.
Persad-Bissessar wished Mitchell and his administration continued success, while expressing hope that the election would usher in further prosperity and progress for Grenadians.
“May the bonds of friendship between Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada continue to grow stronger.”
