Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) and St Lucia Kings battle for a place in Sunday’s Caribbean Premier League final at Providence Stadium in Guyana, on Friday.
Knight Riders earned the right to face the Kings after their nine-wicket win in the Eliminator against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons at the same venue on Tuesday, while Kings’ 14-run loss to Guyana Amazon Warriors in the first Qualifier sent them to have another chance in the second Qualifier.
TKR and Kings split their matches against each other this season. Knight Riders defeated Kings at the Darren Sammy Stadium in St Lucia by 18 runs on August 25. Kings then returned the favour with a convincing seven-wicket win in Tarouba, San Fernando on September 3, handing the hosts their only home loss in the final home match this season.
Speaking ahead of the clash, captain David Wiese, in response to their loss to Guyana when they were bowled out for 143 in pursuit of 158 to win, is hoping the batting will improve.
“It's just basically taking ten minutes just reflecting on this game, where we can learn, where we can get better,” Wiese said. “Not making the same mistakes when we come on Friday (today).”
The reigning champions have looked the most comfortable of the six franchises, with the only losses in the group stage coming against TKR and Barbados Royals in a surprise result.
On the other hand, their opponents today, the four-time champions, TKR, enjoyed a spell of five consecutive wins during the campaign. But the T&T-based team suffered three straight defeats that coincided with the injury and unavailability of experienced Pakistani left-arm pacer Mohammed Amir.
The win against the resurgent Falcons was their first win since their win against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on September 2. But captain Pooran, who was hit with a 20% match fine for dissent against umpire Ryan Banwarie in the win against the Falcons, said the job is far from over.
“We want to take every game as it comes, one game at a time,” Pooran said. “Obviously, we have a job to do. It's not complete yet.”
The first ball at Providence is at 8 pm.
