Cricketing icon Brian Lara has thrown his full support behind his two lifelong friends, Dwight Yorke and Russell Latapy, as they bid to bring glory to Trinidad and Tobago’s attempt to qualify for next year’s FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

“Coaches Dwight Yorke and Russell Latapy, with their Soca Warriors, are going to make Trinidad and Tobago proud again,” predicts Lara.

Lara will be among the thousands expected to be in attendance at the Hasely Crawford Stadium tonight as the local team battles St Kitts and Nevis on the World Cup campaign trail. Kick-off is at 7.30 pm.

Friday is also a memorable one for the batting maestro, as it was on this day 31 years ago that he smashed 501 for Warwickshire, his county team, against Durham in 1994, to become the only player in the history of the sport to reach 500 runs in a first-class innings.

Lara said on Tuesday that the evening is one for celebrating success as well as promoting national pride.

“We need to get behind our team on Friday, which has a lot of meaning, so it is an ideal time to show our support.”

Lara has also launched a national team jersey, branded in each of his record-breaking innings, with today’s 501 anniversary among those featured.

The line of kits also includes his record highest Test score, 400 not out against England in Antigua in 2004; his initial record-breaking Test record of 375 versus England in 1994; and his breakout Test innings of 277 in Sydney, Australia, in 1993.

Lara has also added a special Caribbean Premier League kit for those who will be supporting the CPL later this year.

The full line of kits is available exclusively at the Fan Club, Trincity Mall.
