The funeral service for late automobile enthusiast Rawle Mahabir will be held this morning from 9:00 am at the St John's Parish in Diego Martin, but his cremation will take place next Thursday at the St James Infirmary.
Mahabir died on Wednesday at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital from a heart attack. He was 70 years old. Mahabir began his career in rallying and quickly spread his wings to assist other areas of motorsport, such as drag racing, carting and circuit racing. He was president of the Rally Club in the late 1980s to early 1990s before moving on to promote drag racing, taking the sport across the Caribbean.
The man who basically dedicated his life to motorsport, was yesterday also remembered for his role in implementing the 'drag and wine' initiative which enabled drivers continuous activities, when the sport's local governing body was locked out of the International Wallerfield Centre approximately seven years ago when their lease expired.
Mahabir was also responsible for introducing his own timing system at local and international drag racing events.
