Gabre Mc Tair is the new Di­rec­tor of Phys­i­cal Ed­u­ca­tion and Sport Di­vi­sion, an­nounced by the Min­istry of Sport and Com­mu­ni­ty De­vel­op­ment (MSCD), on Fri­day.

He is a sea­soned sport­ing pro­fes­sion­al, hav­ing served as a Sport Of­fi­cer I and act­ing As­sis­tant Di­rec­tor, with over­sight of tech­ni­cal and ad­min­is­tra­tive mat­ters re­lat­ed to the na­tion­al gov­ern­ing bod­ies and serv­ing as a key li­ai­son be­tween the sport­ing fa­cil­i­ties, stake­hold­ers and the Min­istry.

As Di­rec­tor, Mc Tair has a much more strate­gic role in the de­vel­op­ment of Sport as ar­tic­u­lat­ed in the Na­tion­al Sport Pol­i­cy of T&T. This role speaks to en­rich­ing lives through to­tal par­tic­i­pa­tion, qual­i­ty train­ing, and ex­cel­lence in Sport through the de­vel­op­ment and im­ple­men­ta­tion of projects and pro­grammes to sup­port sport de­vel­op­ment and na­tion­al de­vel­op­ment through Sport.

In his new role as Di­rec­tor, Mc Tair said that his job “man­i­fests it­self through acts of ser­vice,” and “will con­tin­ue to ed­u­cate, in­flu­ence change in per­spec­tive, and as­sist wor­thy caus­es while sup­port­ing the de­vel­op­ment of sport­ing tal­ent.”

One ex­cit­ing ini­tia­tive he is ea­ger to ma­te­ri­alise is the Healthy Spaces Youth Health TT Ini­tia­tive in col­lab­o­ra­tion with the Min­istry of Health, where fit­ness equip­ment will be in­stalled at var­i­ous gov­ern­ment-owned Com­mu­ni­ty Cen­tres through­out the na­tion.

“This will cre­ate im­proved ac­cess to ex­er­cise fa­cil­i­ties for youth in com­mu­ni­ties, where gym spaces are ei­ther sparse, non-ex­is­tent, or cost-pro­hib­i­tive,” said Mc Tair, who has al­ready left the start­ing blocks with his work on the Min­istry’s first-ever com­pre­hen­sive dig­i­tal sports cal­en­dar for 2021.

He holds a Cer­tifi­cate in the Art and Sci­ence of Coach­ing at Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies (UWI) St Au­gus­tine, Bach­e­lors of Sci­ence De­gree in Phys­i­cal Ed­u­ca­tion and Sport from the In­ter­na­tion­al School of Phys­i­cal Ed­u­ca­tion and Sport in Ha­vana, Cu­ba, a cer­tifi­cate in Sport Mar­ket­ing and Man­age­ment, diplo­mas in Sport Psy­chol­o­gy and Ther­a­peu­tic Mas­sage, and is cur­rent­ly com­plet­ing his Mas­ters in Sport for De­vel­op­ment at the Uni­ver­si­ty of T&T (UTT).

Mc Tair serves the T&T Pow­er­lift­ing Fed­er­a­tion as the Cer­ti­fied In­ter­na­tion­al Pow­er­lift­ing Fed­er­a­tion Cat­e­go­ry II Ref­er­ee. He has as­sist­ed both the T&T and Guyana Am­a­teur Pow­er­lift­ing Fed­er­a­tions with their ref­er­ee and ath­lete de­vel­op­ment over sev­er­al years. He has al­so served as a full-time aca­d­e­m­ic in­struc­tor at the UTT and as a part-time lec­tur­er with UWI. In ad­di­tion, he sat­is­fies his pas­sion for health and fit­ness as a group fit­ness in­struc­tor and per­son­al train­er.
