T&T has not been having the best of tournaments in the ring in Poland.
Boxers Nigel Paul and Ortega Jokhu both lost their semifinal fights of the XXXVII Feliks Stamm International Boxing Tournament 5-0 and 3-2, respectively, on Thursday.
Paul, the super heavyweight fighter who fought with credit at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and in 2021 when he won a bronze medal at the International Boxing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, was far from his best, having recently returned from injury.
He went down to a heavy defeat to Delicious Orie of Great Britain. The bulky T&T fighter never had a prayer of a possible victory as all five judges ruled against him. Poland's Artur Goluchu called it 26-30, Italy's Veronika Pausigliore 27-30, Poland's Andrzej Czerwinski 27-30, Artur Chlewinski 26-30 and Valery Pastuchov 27-30, all against the Trinidadian.
Jokhu on the other hand, was edged in his 51kg contest by Jakub Slominski of Poland.
T&T will now have one more roll of the dice at a chance of a medal today when Angel George will match fists with Sue-Emma Greentree of Austria in a 91kg final bout. Both fighters will contest the final due to the small number of fighters in the division.
The fighters have been using the tournament as preparation for the coming Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in El Salvador from June 19 to July 8, and the Pan American Games later in the year.
